*Main* Story:

So Asterius was having vision problems (she was wearing sun glasses, had friend Spike refer her to Dr. Bush, an optometrist) and she also had a couple men who were very attracted to her (Valentino, Prince George).  At the beginning of the party she was getting louder and somewhat tipsy, yet she really didn't have that much to drink.   She got a phone call as she headed toward to the restroom and yelled out.  A couple ladies (June and Valeri?) followed her in to see if she was ok and they ran out in hysterics.  Garold Albright, the only "doctor" in the place checked on her and pronounced her dead.  The few items on her were removed and taken to the "evidence and games" table.  Items removed were:  amethyst jewelry, empty syringe, note with Dr. Bush and his phone number, and her phone.

Dante, with the permission of Samuel Jovin, announced that at midnight, if the incident wasn't figured out that the authorities would be called (more than just our resident assistant deputy Dorlene).  Then everyone tried to figure out what could have happened to Asterius Jovin.

Her phone had a few phone numbers listed in its memory with the times they were called.   This included her checking her messages, calling Dr. Bush, and an unknown number.   This last number was called a few times by her husband, Samuel, as he didn't recognize it.  After several times, it was determined that the number was actually the number of another phone upstairs with the coats - it was not in anyone's belongings and no one claimed it.  It was added to the evidence pile - it had a redial function, unfortunately no one determined what this phone had to do with anything.

Solution:

The symptoms of Asterius was that of someone going in to analeptic (sp?) shock.   She was suffering from a new and heavy case of diabetes.  She didn't know this until she went to see Dr. Bush about her vision problem (white flashes) that's where she got the news and medication (syringe = insulin injection).  She didn't have a good relationship with Samuel and so he wasn't aware of this new condition (she also didn't others to know).  So she wasn't really drunk as these are also symptoms before going in to a coma (amethyst = "not drunk").  So this is one part of the story that only one person figured out, sorta.

Garold Albright found Asterius alive, but in a deep coma.  He pronounced her dead and moved her body out of sight - he also removed the stuff from her needle so she couldn't be helped.  He didn't care about her either way, but he was extremely upset with Samuel Jovin, and this seemed like an easy way to punish him without having to do anything.  He could always claim his drinking that night caused a bad diagnosis.

Samuel was part of a few biotech companies, one of which was providing funding and amazing new devices that he was secretly funneling to Yvonne Kruell.  She was able to use one of these (the one that liquidizes fat) to affect particular sections of the brain directly.  She was currently conducting these "ethically questionable" experiments and getting great results.  Garold found out about this and demanded that he be provided similar equipment/funding to no avail.  It was his phone that was upstairs and the last number he called on it (using the redial function) was Samuel's work phone where he left a very nasty message that demonstrated how angry he was and revealed even more of this plot.

Unfortunately someone decided to make a personal phone call to Dr. Bush (the number was 555-????, i.e. fake) using this important piece of evidence though I think one or two folks caught the number listed on it originally, they chose not to do anything about it.   So no one made the phone call that would have told them whose office it was and no one figured out the answering machine code (not a real surprise, it was very difficult, but it would have given the answer).

The notes that random characters got in their envelopes as they arrived are the following (colors placed in order of the spectrum):

(())    Most answering machines can be accessed externally if you have the numeric code.
(Black)    Cinco de Mayo : dates
(White)    Key to puzzle : sounds
(Red)    Purple is now red.  Why?
(Yellow)    Who here is a spy?
(Green)    What was truly in the drink?
(Blue)    Design your best strategy with logic and luck.
(Purple)    "No longer a game, this is" the master says.

* If you take the 5th syllable of each line (you figure this out from the black and white notes) you get:  Red Spy In Strat[egy] Game.
On the table was a box of Stratego and hidden inside the red spy was the answering machine code.
